Busting the myths about Electric Vehicles at The Arc

  • Electric Vehicles are cheaper to run, save on emissions and with more and more charger points being installed around the UK, they are also becoming an easier option for drivers.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be holding its first electric vehicle show on Charter Square in The Arc in Bury St Edmunds on 10 August.

The show, from 9am to 5pm will offer residents and businesses the chance to find out more about the financial and environmental savings they can make by switching to electric vehicles, plus view some of the latest models on offer, including hybrids.

Cllr Alaric Pugh, St Edmundsbury’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Growth said: “Electric vehicles generally cost just 2p per mile to run compared to 10p for a petrol or diesel car so there is a huge economical saving to be made, while many models will run 100 to 120 miles on a single charge.

“The number of electric charge points is growing all the time – latest figures from Zap-Map (https://www.zap-map.com ) shows there are more than 11,000 charge points at over 4,000 locations across the UK. In Bury St Edmunds, there is a charge point on level six of the Parkway Multistorey Car Park, while in West Suffolk, we are looking to install more charge points in Bury, Haverhill and Newmarket within this financial year.

“On top of all this electric vehicles produce zero emissions, helping to improve local air quality - figures from Public Heath England suggest that poor air quality is a contributory factor in one in 20 deaths of people aged 30 and over, even in more rural areas such as West Suffolk.”

There is an additional incentive to businesses looking to switch to electric vehicles. West Suffolk councils Greener Business Grant can be used amongst other things, to pay towards the costs of an electric vehicle or the cost of installing a company vehicle electric charge point. The Council will match fund businesses up to £1,000 towards the costs.

You can find out more about the latest range of electric vehicles at our show in Charter Square, Bury St Edmunds on 10 August from 9am to 5pm.
